Through a crack in the closet door, Eve’s eyes trailed down and back up the length of Lainey’s body, and felt herself get wet when Lainey looked back at her. She watched as Lainey straddled Jack again and took him inside her, dropping her gaze when they both moaned and Lainey began rocking her body back and forth.
She shielded the emotions in her eyes when Lainey looked up at her, riding Jack faster, her moans becoming louder. She slipped a hand into her jeans as Lainey watched.
Lainey was so close, but she heard Jack calling out her name and knew that if she didn’t come now, she wouldn’t at all. Lainey tried slowing the pace of their lovemaking, but Jack only moved faster, reaching up to grab her breasts.
“Lainey.”
“Jack, wait. Not yet,” she told him. She looked back up at Eve and noticed that she had removed her hand from her jeans.
“Jack, slow down.”
“No, Lainey. Now.” With one hard thrust, Jack emptied himself into Lainey until he collapsed, exhausted and out of breath.
“Wow!” he said breathlessly. “Let’s do that more often.” He patted Lainey’s ass and lifted her off of him. “I’m going to take a shower. What’s for dinner?”
“I don’t know yet,” Lainey answered miserably and shrugged into her robe. “What are you doing?” She ran up to him and stopped him just before he opened the closet door.
“I’m getting my clothes. What is wrong with you?” He asked, looking at her strangely.
“Nothing is wrong with me. Go take your shower. I’ll bring your clothes in to you,” she told him and stood her ground in front of the closet door.
“I can get my clothes myself, Lainey.”
“Will you just let me do this for you, please? Go. Take your shower. Relax.”
Jack sighed heavily. “Fine,” he said and disappeared into the bathroom.
Lainey waited until she heard the running water of the shower before opening the closet door. “I’m so sorry,” she told Eve. “I never meant for you to watch.”
Eve gave Lainey a small smile. “I’m going to get out of here before he comes back out.”
Lainey ran after her and grabbed her arm. “Eve.”
“Lainey, its fine,” Eve said. “I know my way out. You don’t have to walk me down.” Eve took two steps and turned back. “I’d never treat you the way he did, Lainey,” she said. “You’ll know what pleasure is when you’re with me.”
“I know I will,” Lainey whispered to herself as she watched Eve hurry down the stairs. “I can’t wait.”
Eve pressed her forehead against her steering wheel. She was angry, angry that she had had to watch Lainey make love to Jack, and angry that Jack didn’t know how to please Lainey. She swore and started the car. “Someday, Lainey,” she said aloud and drove off.
Half an hour later, she found herself at Adam’s front door, not exactly remembering driving there. She knocked, the need to have him becoming more urgent with each passing second. He answered the door, bare-chested, wearing jeans.
“Eve!” he said, clearly surprised and delighted to see her.
Eve stopped dead when a young brunette appeared next to Adam, wearing only boxers and a tank top.
“Who is it, Adam?” she asked and then, apparently feeling the heat radiating from Eve’s angry eyes, stepped back.
“Eve! Wait!” Adam cried as she turned and ran down the steps. “It’s not what it looks like. Damn it!”
“I guess that was Eve,” the brunette said as he threw on a shirt.
“You guessed right,” Adam retorted putting on his shoes. “Tell Jill to lock up. I don’t know when I’ll be back.”
Eve’s hands were shaking violently when she got to her front door and tried unlocking it. “Damn it!” she swore vehemently and took a deep breath to calm herself. Finally, she got the door open and hurried inside. Once inside, she leaned back against the door and tried to control her breathing.
“Son of a bitch!” she whispered heatedly. “Son of a bitch!”
She slammed her closed fists against the wall. How could he do this to her? If he wanted out of the damn relationship all he had to do was tell her. Eve paced the living room cursing Adam, until she finally gave up and sank down on the couch. Head in hands, she massaged her temples to relieve the headache that was beginning to pound. Just then, she heard the banging on the door.
“Eve! Open up!” She heard Adam shout. “I know you’re in there! Henry told me he saw you coming up! Eve, open the door. Please.”
Giving up, Eve put the chain on the door and opened it.
“What? You’re going to wake up the damn neighbors,” she said through the crack of the door.
“It wasn’t what it looked like, Eve,” he protested.
“Wasn’t it? How old is she Adam? Twenty?”
“She’s nineteen, but...”
“Oh! Even better! Goodbye, Adam,” Eve retorted, attempting to shut the door.
“Will you listen to me?” Adam demanded, pushing one foot in the door. “It’s not what you think.”
Eve gave him a humorless laugh. “And, I suppose next you’re going to tell me that she was your sister.”
“No, but she’s a friend of my sister’s. It’s true, Eve. Jill is in town. She’s staying with me and the girl you saw is a friend of hers. You have to believe me, Eve. I would never do that to you.”
From the corner of her eye, Eve saw Mrs. Jenkins peeking out of her door.
“What was I supposed to do?” Adam continued. There was desperation in his voice. “My sister just showed up with her, I couldn’t just put them out on the street.”
“Will you let me close the goddamn door so I can take the chain off?” Eve said, her voice emotionless. “I don’t particularly want to talk to you right now, Adam, but obviously you’re not going anywhere, and I don’t want an audience.” Eve gestured irritably for him to come in and shot Mrs. Jenkins a look before closing the door. “Start talking,” she said folding her arms across her chest.
“Can we sit down?”
“No,” Eve told him and stood her ground.
“Her name is Megan,” Adam said wearily. “She and my sister have been friends since kindergarten. Jill brought her here to show her the city and they ended up on my doorstep. I swear to God, Eve, that’s the truth.”
“Do all of your sister’s friends walk around half naked when they’re visiting you?” Eve asked him. “And, you. You were half naked yourself when you opened the door. What was I supposed to think, Adam?”
“I know it looked bad, Eve.” He pushed a hand through his hair in frustration. “I had just gotten out of the shower before you showed up. As for Megan, that’s just how she is, I guess. Look, they ordered a pizza and when you knocked on the door, they must have thought the pizza had arrived and that’s why she came to the door.”
He picked up Eve’s phone. “Call my place. Ask for Jill. She’ll tell you that what I’m saying is the truth. Call.” He reached out for her, but Eve backed away.
“Don’t,” she told him.
“Eve, I would never hurt you that way,” he said quietly.
“I don’t hurt, remember?” she said, walking into the living room and sinking down onto the couch, pushing a hand through her hair. “But, I do get pissed off.”
“Tell me you believe me, Eve,” he begged, falling to his knees in front of her.
Eve searched his face and found only sincerity there. “Fine,” she said simply.
“Fine?” he exclaimed. “What’s that supposed to mean? I beg you to believe me and all you can say is ‘fine’?”
“What do you want from me, Adam?” she asked exasperated. “I told you I believed you, what more do you want?”
“At least tell me why you came to my apartment, Eve.”
“To fuck you.”
He moved closer to her and took her hands in his. “We could still do that.”
“Don’t you get it, Adam?” Eve said impatiently. “I came there to use you. Today has been a
very frustrating day, and I came over for a release.”
“And, you think I should be mad at that?”
“Why aren’t you? Adam, I didn’t go there to talk or to be comforted. What I wanted was sex. Nothing more.”
“And you thought of me. It’s perfectly normal to want to be with the person you...” He trailed off.
“You what?” She gave a mirthless laugh. “You can’t even say it when you’re talking about me, can you, because you know there’s nothing in here.” She raised one hand to her heart.
“That’s not true, Eve,” he protested.
“It is!” She closed her eyes for a moment. “The whole point of last night was to show you, to show myself, that there was more between us than sex, that I could give you more than sex.”
She looked at him again. “But, I can’t. I’ll never be able to give you what you want. Adam, I can’t be who you need me to be.”
“Eve, you are what I want, what I need. I told you from the beginning that I would wait for you as long as I had to, and I meant it.”
“You also told me the other night that you didn’t know how much longer you could wait,” Eve reminded him. “And, when we made love that night you felt the difference just as I did. I know you did.”
It was dangerous to press him. She knew that. But they couldn’t keep ignoring what was happening. Did she really have the right to keep holding on to him, knowing she couldn’t give him more?
“Things haven’t changed for me,” he told her. “Yes, that night it was different because I tried to pull back from you. What I found, Eve, was that I don’t want to pull away from you.”
He touched her cheek and leaned in to kiss her.
Eve put her fingers to Adam’s lips. “You can’t stay,” she whispered. Adam lowered his head and sighed. “I’m sorry,” Eve told him. “I’m just not ready for that.”
“What happened to you, Eve? Why can’t you open up to me?”
“Don’t. Don’t try to analyze me. I’m not going to talk about my past. This is who I am, Adam.” She lifted his chin so that he would look at her. “Why are you with me?” she asked.
“Because I love being with you.”
“You love having sex with me.”
“No, Eve. I’m in love with you.”
Eve felt her entire body go rigid. “You don’t even know me, Adam,” she whispered.
“I know enough about you to know that the thought of not being with you is unbearable to me,” he told her, reaching out to trace the outline of her face. “I don’t want to be without you. I know that when I’m with you it kills me to know that you can’t open up to me. And,” he continued before Eve could say anything, “it kills me to walk out that door every night and leave you alone. I hate not being able to wake up with you in the morning and feel your body next to mine. I want to be able to roll over in the middle of the night and touch you, to make love to you.”
“Adam.”
“You don’t have to say anything, Eve. I just wanted you to know how I felt. I’ll try my best to give you the time you need because no matter how much you want to hide the fact from me, I know you care.”
“I do care,” she said softly. “I care very much for you. I just don’t...I can’t give you more. I don’t know how.”
“Then for now, this is enough.”
Adam took Eve’s face in his hands and brought his mouth to hers, kissing her passionately. Burying her hands in his hair, Eve moaned as his tongue merged with hers and he started unbuttoning her shirt. Eve lifted Adam’s t-shirt over his head and ran her hands over his chest as he slipped her shirt off her shoulders and bent his head to roll his tongue over her skin. Eve tipped back her head and groaned as his hands traveled across her stomach, around to her back. His fingertips trailed down her spine, giving her chill bumps.
Adam stood up and held his hand out to Eve, but she remained seated and reached up to undo his jeans. God, she loved Adam’s body. The way his muscles rippled when she touched him or the way he trembled when her mouth was on him. She took him into her mouth then, and heard him groan as he fisted his hands in her hair.
She was driving him insane with the things she was doing with that perfect mouth of hers and he fought to stay in control. When he couldn’t take anymore, he brought Eve up to him and undid her jeans. “You’re so beautiful,” he whispered, his voice rough with desire, while his eyes roamed over her naked body.
Eve crushed her mouth to his and wrapped her legs around him when he picked her up.
“No,” she said when Adam started for the stairs. “Down here. In the chair.”
Sitting her down in the oversized chair in front of the fireplace, he got down on his knees in front of her. Adam took Eve’s nipple in his teeth and gave it a gentle tug, nipping and licking his way down over Eve’s stomach, loving the way she moaned and moved into him. His hands gently parted Eve’s legs further and he dipped his head to taste her. Eve let out a cry as Adam’s tongue probed her.
“Adam,” she moaned, her breathing coming faster as she neared that first peak. Adam took her over the edge with his mouth, groaning as he felt her body tremble after the orgasm. Still gasping, her body gleaming with sweat, she pulled Adam to her and in a deft movement, was on top of him as he sat in the chair.
Eve leaned her body back, putting her legs over Adam’s shoulders, resting her feet on the back of the chair, and took Adam inside her.
The position gave Adam a wonderful view of Eve and he let out what could only be described as a primitive growl as she rocked her body. He feathered his hands up her legs and turned his head to kiss the inside of her knees.
“God.” Eve moved her body faster, taking Adam’s hands in hers.
“Eve,” Adam breathed. He wouldn’t be able to hold back much longer, he thought. She was driving him mad. “Oh, Eve.”
“Inside me, Adam. Now, now, now.” They both cried out as the orgasm washed over them. Adam felt Eve tighten around him her body convulsing and he let himself empty inside her.
“My God, Eve,” he groaned, his own body still trembling.
Eve brought her legs down, straddling Adam so that she could kiss him. “I’m not done with you,” he whispered.
“Mmm. I hope not,” she told him and kissed him again.
Adam stood up with Eve’s legs locked around him and took her to the couch where he brought his body down on top of hers and moved slowly inside her.
“Am I hurting you?” he asked when she cried out, sharply.
“No! Don’t stop,” she told him and murmured his name, as he started moving again. “You feel so good,” Eve whispered in his ear, flicking her tongue out to tease it.
“Wrap your legs around me, baby. Hold on to me.”
“Make love to me, Adam,” she begged him, moving her body under his, matching his rhythm. “Don’t stop.” Eve was desperate for him. The need, the pure lust for him, staggered her.
The sound of flesh against flesh, moans, and whispers filled the room as they brought each other to that peak again. Adam thrust inside her faster and faster as Eve tightened her legs around him.
“More, more. Give me more, Adam. Yes!” She raked her nails down his sweat slicked back as he obeyed. She wanted so much more than she deserved. Wanted to give so much more than she had.
“Eve.” He buried his head against her shoulder. I love you, he mouthed, and came, taking her over with him.
They lay there together, spent and satisfied, Eve’s fingertips roving over Adam’s back. “Don’t move,” she told him when he stirred. “Stay inside me. Just for a little while longer.”
“I’ll stay inside you forever if you want me to, Eve.” He kissed her mouth gently and played with her hair, hoping against hope that she would tell him to stay. Everything he ever wanted was right here beneath him, and yet she always held him at arm’s length. He was never allowed to give her everything, or take more than she permitted.
“I should go,” he said finally.
“No
t yet. Please? Stay a little longer.” Eve wanted to tell him to stay the night, to take her to bed and sleep with her. Why couldn’t she? Why, every time when she opened her mouth to say those words, did nothing come out?
“As long as you want,” he told her. “How is the gallery coming?” he added in an attempt to get his mind off of leaving. “It looked great when I was there earlier.”
Eve smiled radiantly, and Adam’s heart almost stopped at the pure beauty of her. “Thank you. It’s coming along great. I think we’ll actually be done ahead of schedule.” She kissed his cheek and neck, her tongue tasting the salty residue of sweat.
“Lainey is doing a great job.”
Eve’s eyes fluttered closed when she heard Lainey’s name.
“Yes, she is.”
“I like her.”
Eve thought of Lainey and the attraction they had to each other. “So do I.”
“Jack is another story,” Adam said, adjusting a throw pillow behind Eve’s head.
“Why do you say that?” She remembered how upset Adam had been at the club then. “What did he say to you last night?”
“It was nothing,” he told her, trying to brush it aside.
“Obviously it was something if you were upset. Tell me, baby.”
“I don’t think he likes you very much, Eve.”
“Really? I’m heartbroken,” she replied with dripping sarcasm. “Why do you feel that way?”
“I don’t think he likes Lainey working, and he thinks you’re a slave driver. I believe he thinks you’re changing Lainey.”
God, I hope so, Eve thought to herself.
“I took up for you,” Adam went on, and earned another heart stopping smile.
“My hero.” Eve brought Adam’s mouth down to hers and kissed him fervently, her tongue dancing with his. She gasped and arched to him. “Mmm. I love it when you grow hard inside me,” she said breathlessly.
Eve woke up in the middle of the night and reached for Adam. The bed was empty beside her and for the first time, Eve felt completely alone, and sorry that she had made him leave.
